With anything we do, we need to learn how to walk before we can run. With fitness, if you can’t do a proper push-up (walking), then you have no business throwing a barbell up over your head (running). The same goes with burning fat and nutrition. If you aren’t practicing the basic fundamentals from a nutrition standpoint, then there’s no need to talk about the more advanced details of your nutrition.
The easiest way to burn more fat and one of the first steps in our nutrition program has nothing to do with food. The easiest way to burn fat is to make sure you are getting the proper amount of water that you should be drinking. We ask people all the time “Are you drinking enough water?” “Oh yeah, I do really well with water” is a response we get all the time. Then the three-day dietary record comes in and we find out the truth. Rarely is anyone even close. We have had people lose over 5 pounds in two weeks by drinking the proper amount of water alone.
The truth is, you will never know how much water you are drinking unless you have a way to measure it. You need to have a shaker bottle or some sort of re-usable water bottle that is designated for your water only. Take your body weight, divide that number by two and this will give you your minimum number in ounces that you should be drinking in water every day.
For example, I weigh 185 pounds, so 185/2 = 92.5. I should be drinking at least 92.5 ounces a day. To make this easy for myself, I know I need to drink four full 25oz shaker bottles full of water every day.
When you start doing this, begin by just figuring out how much water you are currently drinking. If you are only drinking 30 ounces of water every day, it will be very difficult to double or triple that number right away. Set a goal to get to the proper amount of water within two weeks. If you can do it quicker than that, great! The idea is to set a deadline. Also, record your weight the day you start focusing on drinking more water, and weigh yourself again in two weeks.
The beginning will be very difficult and borderline uncomfortable, but if you stick with it and improve, it will become easy for you to get your minimum amount. If you stay with it make drinking water a part of your life, you will see your weight start to go down and/or lose inches off your body, you will become more energized and (most importantly) you will begin to feel much better.
Remember, you need to be able to walk before you can run, and drinking the correct amount of water is the easiest way to start burning fat and losing weight.
We hope this helps! Please share your results with us and we’d also love to hear any comments and questions you have.
