Why are you doing this?

Seems like a simple question, and the most common answers I get to this are things like “I want to lose 20 pounds” or “I want to tone up.” There’s nothing wrong with having aesthetic goals (I have them myself). However, if you don’t take the time to think about the REAL reason why you’re making the time to work out, you’ll end up quitting (or wanting to) the moment a challenge pops up in your life.

I shared my story a few weeks ago, and a big motivator for me when it comes to my health and fitness is that I not only want to be here for my family as long as I can as they grow older and have kids, but I want to be able to participate in activities and truly be a part of their lives.

If you missed my story, a big reason why health and fitness is important to me is because I learned the hard way the impact of lifelong neglect has on your health. My dad died of stage 4 lung cancer in 2019 and will miss so many important moments in our lives, including never meeting our son Jaxson, and missing his daughter’s wedding coming up in November (I will be walking her down the aisle in his place). I’m sure many of you have similar experiences.

Too often do we not appreciate our health until our health is at risk. For me, my health and fitness are non-negotiable. It doesn’t matter if I feel like it or not. I know that by not taking care of myself I can’t be my best in all the areas that matter. If I want to be the best husband, father, sibling, coach, and friend I can be, I need to take care of myself first.

So again, I ask, why are YOU doing this? Why is your health and fitness important to you?

I would love to hear your “WHY”. Please feel free to send me a message or email me WHY you’re doing this. It can get personal, so I understand if you would like to keep it to yourself. I encourage you to journal about this. This will help keep you going on days when you don’t feel like it.

Let’s have a great week!

-Steve
